FAQ

  1. What is Holi?

Holi is basically an amazing annual festival that’s celebrated here in India, primarily during late winter known as the spring season. It’s one of our most colorful festivals where people play, laugh and basically have an awesome time.

  2. When is Holi celebrated?

Holi is generally celebrated each year in February or March based on the Hindu lunar calendar. The festival usually lasts for a couple days – on the night of Purnima or the full moon day, which falls on the 15th day of Phalgun maas. Basically folks get together and enjoy not only that night but usually the next day too!

  3. What are the rituals of Holi?

Some of the main rituals and traditions of Holi include: lighting a bonfire called Holika Dahan the night before, smearing each other with colors like gulal during the day, playing with water guns and water balloons too (basically getting soaked from head to toe)! People also fry snacks and dishes like gujiya and malpua. And of course singing, dancing, and laughing tons!

  4. What is the significance of Holi?

Holi supposedly commemorates various important legends from Hindu mythology. One legend behind Holi is how the demoness Holika was miraculously killed in a fire, while the holy man Prahlad, whom she was trying to kill, survived – signifying the victory of good over evil. Have you ever been curious if that story actually happened? Perhaps it’s more of a moral tale! At the same time, Holi also symbolizes the arrival of spring, end of winter, and forgiveness and new beginnings. It’s kind of like a fresh start.

  5. Which state celebrates Holi best?

That’s sort of a debatable topic as almost all parts of India celebrate the awesome festival of Holi with great enthusiasm! However, there are a few places that kinda stand out. The states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar might be the best places to experience the amazing festivities and streets filled with incredibly vivid colors. Or perhaps you prefer the unique sand-colored Lathmar Holi in the Nandgaon village of Barsana in UP? Either way you can’t go wrong with Holi celebrations all around!

  6. What are some Holi songs?

Some classic Holi tunes that you’ll hear blasting everywhere and get people bustin’ their awesome moves include “Rang Barse”, “Basanti Ki Dhoom Machai”, “Holi Mein Rangeeli Raat”, “Kesariya Bala”, and “Rango Mein Rangli Ho Gayi Re”. Basically most Holi playlists will feature those dancefloor fillers on repeat. Not to mention traditional folk songs wishing for color and blessings. Are any of those melodies stuck in your head yet?!

  7. Is Holi safe during the pandemic?

With the ongoing COVID-19 situation, mass Holi celebrations involving lots of strangers tossing colors on each other are not recommended as it could increase chances of transmission. Physical distancing needs to be strictly maintained. Perhaps this year celebrate at home with your pod or virtually connect through calls and videos with close family and friends instead of doing public festivities. The virus kinda puts a damper on fun plans this time around, but safety has to come first, right? Fingers crossed things improve next year!

So in summary – while the pandemic changes things, Holi remains an amazingly colorful festival commemorating triumph of good over evil. The bonfires, songs, sweets and throwing of gulal sure bring laughter and joy! Whether you partake via digital means or small at-home fun this year, wishing you health and happiness. Why not end by asking – what are your own memories and plans for Holi 2021?
